My buddy Ralph (Monday, April 18, 2016)

Dear Mom and ________,

Well, it's been another week! Life is crazy as usual and it's been a
week with ups and downs, but we could say the same about life in
general. Nothing in particular stands out from this week, but I found
a poem that I liked. It's by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

What is success?
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by
a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.

Another thing that stood out to me is a quote I heard: "We work to
live- we don't live to work." I've met so many people who are so
caught up in their busy lives and working and running around doing
errands that they don't have time for anything that's truly important.
When we remember the true reason why we even came to this earth, our
decisions and priorities shift. Once I had a companion who always
shared this pearl of wisdom whenever people complained about not
having enough time to keep commitments they make: "If you're too busy
to read your scriptures/pray/go to church, then you are busier than
God ever intended you to be." I might have already shared that with
you, but I think it's good to keep in mind. I hope you're all having a
great week!
